Biography
Bringing a design sensibility to his work and drawing upon his background as an art director, RAG’s paintings explore the many properties and meanings of color. In one body of work, he covered canvases in monochromatic acrylic paint and placed phrases like “titanium dioxide” atop the surface, referring to each color’s chemical composition. In this way, RAG creates a conversation between the aesthetic and visuals effects of a color and the science of its structure. In another series, RAG explored the political ramifications of color by placing flags from different countries next to one another; he stripped the colors from each flag and then printed those colors within the image of the opposite flag, creating an unsettling effect and raising ambiguous questions about nationalism.
